Roni Horn likes clowns…

Contemporary photographer Roni Horn places herself in direct dialogue with whatever she is shooting. She immerses herself in the life experience of her subject, whether the cold darkness of the Tames river or the light-hearted, transient face of a clown.  A Coulrophobic myself, the distorted images of the dispersing clown face put me on edge, and yet are somehow reassuring- vaporous and harmless, but still menacing like an apparition that is seen but cannot cross planes.  Her photographs capture the essence of space and the flow of time.  She describes herself as wanting to keep her “feet in moving water,” never out of contact with reality or the world.  Her images reflect on emotions; calling up memories and involuntary feelings whether or not we recognize the place or time.  She says “I am the prey and water is the predator,” but I think she may have overlooked that clown…  LOOK OUT!
